New regulations are being proposed in Malta regarding what has been euphemistically called, voluntary euthanasia or assisted dying. There are justified serious reservations about the wisdom of such legislation and others have called upon the government to exercise great caution or even to reconsider. The government is proposing to assist terminally ill persons to commit suicide. There is so much wrong with this initiative that one despairs.
Just off the top of my head I would say it is arrogant, disingenuous and dangerous. I cannot imagine why any politician would think that assisting your own citizens to commit suicide is a good idea. There will be some political suicides along the way.
I fully agree that this further misadventure will open its own Pandora’s box. Disruption of families is being ignored, the possibility of recovery is all but dismissed. We have abandoned our Christian values. It will accelerate the fragmentation of our society. We should seek to protect life and not find ways to end it.
The political class do not know what they are doing and are trespassing into realms where angels fear to tread. The dumbing-down of people by incessant corporate and public messaging has turned informed consent into a farce. My guess is that, apart from a couple of conscientious objectors, the proposal will go through with a full vote in parliament.
Interestingly the regulations include this provision “The termination of life through assisted voluntary euthanasia shall be considered a natural death, provided that the board has verified and certified that all legal procedures have been duly followed.” The intention to hide these events is curious and smacks of an attempt to protect the enablers from the social disdain that will follow them.
Now, there is another important matter to consider, which is the matter of life itself.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth; And the earth was without form and void; And the darkness was upon the face of the deep; And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” And so it began. Life has mystic and transcendental origins.
What we give the highest credibility to is the god we bow our head to. Science is not the source of life.
Only humans talk of science. The notion of science simply does not exist, nor has relevance, in any non-human realm. Also, just to state the obvious, there is life without humanity. All other forms of life do not need humans to survive, quite the opposite. At best, science observes, names, models on the basis of mostly reliable hypotheses, puts together and implements what is necessary to satisfy our needs.
On the other hand, whatever else science produces goes to market to satisfy our limitless greed. At no point is there any discernment exercised by anybody as to whether the results of science honour the highest principality of goodness.
Science tells us absolutely nothing about the source, the nature, the meaning and the purpose of life. What science does do, is support the delusion that humans create. It feeds our Luciferian pride. We are assemblers not creators. We are the created not the creator. Life is fundamentally a spiritual journey. We should not go on bended knee before the artifacts that we assemble.
Life is simply not ours to take or give. This is why murder is punished and suicide greatly discouraged. The vast majority of mothers, especially, consider the birth of a child as nothing short of miraculous.
Government should, of course, ensure that palliative care is properly and comprehensively funded. God knows enough public funds are thrown around at questionable projects. Health should be prioritised over treatment. This means policies should be in place to improve the diet and the physical health of Maltese people. Healthy lifestyles should be incentivised.
Toxic products and harmful ‘food’ products should not be allowed into the country. Treatments should be under constant critical review and not by some supranational agency, but locally where patients and families can call out the Minister for Health face to face when things go wrong.
Similar legislation to that proposed had been implemented in a few countries in the last century and the people behind it were never the good guys. Also, history informs that a government will hardly ever surrender voluntarily any power it is allowed to have, and it will ultimately abuse all its powers to the maximum extent possible.
On the 28th May Pope Leo XIV stated “before being a religious matter, compassion is a question of humanity”. Unfortunately, such a statement is similar to one of the tenets of atheism that sees compassion as an inherently human attribute.
This phrase is fast becoming a sound-bite, used out of context, which should have been foreseen. Human ideas about kindness need to be tempered by reality, truth, life, religion and spirituality before resembling anything remotely reflecting divine compassion. Just being human does not cut it. Politicians are fond of virtue signaling and it is at best misguided human kindness that has given birth to the idea of assisted suicide.
A culture of death has established its home in the corridors of power in Malta and the rest of the Western world. We need politicians who stand for life, for health and for goodness.
We are crossing a red line here. All people of good will can see this.
