The Quest for the Holy Grail

The quest for Holy Grail is the search for the highest truth, the highest goodness, the highest reality.

Of all the characteristics that I find concerning about humankind, there are at least two that stand out. The first is that many consider that they do not need to deepen their understanding on the meaning and purpose of life. The second is the belief that we are self created and are prime movers.

A proper understanding of ourselves and our place on earth, or in creation for that matter, is critical for our development and fulfillment. We are not just our thoughts, our emotions or our outside physical appearance. Following a religion without commitment, thinking that we are not expected to implement in our lives the scriptural teachings, is reckless. It is true that not all members of religious orders are able to expound the teachings in an inspiring, or even credible, manner and that not all scriptures may be recommendable. This by no means, however, exonerates us from taking personal responsibility for our relationship with the divine.

It is fruitful for us to seek answers wherever we can find them. We should question and consider it all carefully through, logical thought, mindfulness, prayer and contemplation.  We should debate with like-minded people as well as with those holding differing views. How has the earth we live on come to be, how did we come to be and for what meaning and purpose. We ought to be as the knight Percival, on a quest in search of the Holy Grail.

It is not difficult to see that our origins are transcendental. It should also be clear that that which is beyond physicality, permeates all space, and is what fires all creation every second of every day.

Blind faith in science as the source of truth is unwise. The whole scientific enterprise is ultimately hypothetical. Of course, some hypotheses work well enough for us, others less so or not at all. However, functionality is not the point.

For example, we hypothesise that an atom is the smallest building block of all matter and that it is constituted by a nucleus, made of protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons. This is a predictive model. What we do know is the effectiveness of this model and, by experimentation, the various ways in which it can be used. This model, or other models, as clever as they may sound, are not fact, but fundamentally, only hypotheses. Nobody has ever seen an atom. Exploitation does not mean ownership and even less, creation. We should appreciate that being able to model our observations and then, per chance, find ways in which we can industrialise the processes to our advantage, does not mean we own any of it, or that we know what is taking place.

One may believe that creation occurred as a Big Bang fourteen billion years ago. In fact, we were not there fourteen billion years ago. We also were not present with God while the creation enterprise was taking shape, whenever you may think that was. We therefore cannot possibly be prime movers. The laws of physics are nothing more than humanity’s idea of how worldly phenomena may be comprehended by people. This makes them functional, but it does not make them real or true.

Life is a spiritual journey and is best seen in that context. This is so for all that is alive. We are at a pivotal point in our journey. It is prudent for each one of us to make a choice between the light of goodness and the desolation of darkness – there is no safe middle ground. The tyranny that enslaves us is now in the open for all to see. We shall either be free or slaves.  The power of goodness is rising and getting stronger. It is the responsibility of each one of us to trace the path to freedom. “…and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8: 31-32). Truth at all levels is a catalyst for good and an active agent. The highest truth is not a path to follow. It is a total transformation. It is the Embrace of God.
