Plastic-Free Choices demanded by Oceana

We should not be forced to pollute the ocean every time we eat, drink or go shopping. We need to be given a choice, a plastic-free choice. Our oceans sustain life. An abundant ocean can feed a billion people a healthy meal every day forever. But now they are being killed, filled by throwaway plastics. The equivalent of one garbage truck of garbage is dumped in the sea every minute, 17.6 billion pounds (8 million tons) every year. Plastic is everywhere in our ocean, floating on the surface, mixing in the salt water and sitting on the ocean bottom, miles and miles deep. And once in the ocean it never goes away.

since 1969 hundreds of thousands of dolphins have been brutally slaughtered at Taiji, Japan. Dolphin pod communities hundreds strong have been decimated or even annihilated and countless dolphin families torn apart in what can only be described as an ongoing genocide.

Plastic Waste: We are the Problem

Worldwide 80% of plastic waste ends up in landfills and the environment. There it multiplies by breaking down into smaller pieces, up to sizes that are measured in microns (1000 microns = 1 mm). All the plastic ever manufactured still exists somewhere on Earth, most of it too small to see. It enters the food chain via packaging, water, agricultural produce and other species we consume, and ends up in us.
